Nakedness General
The term "pelt" refers to the animal hide after the animal hair on the upper surface and the meat and fat on the underside have been removed. The hide is now hair-free and ready for tanning.
Nakedness in leather production
Before this step in leather production, the skin is referred to as the hide or rawhide. Before the hide becomes skin, it undergoes pickling and pickling, followed by tanning.
In this state, the animal skin is very sensitive, hence the origin of the proverbial “exposing oneself”.
