Impregnation of leather during production
Leather is impregnated or hydrophobicized to make it more water-resistant. In this case, experts refer to this as hydrophobic leather. Impregnation is particularly necessary for leathers that are naturally sensitive to moisture and dirt. This applies to all open-pored leathers, such as rough leather (nubuck and suede) and aniline leather. To make them more weather-resistant, these types of leather are usually hydrophobicized in the tannery.
Impregnating leather after production
Post-production waterproofing is usually applied as a spray. Waterproofing sprays are available at any department store or shoe shop. The most effective are solvent-based ones, as they impart water-repellent properties to the leather. The first time, the sprays must be applied in several coats, allowing time for drying between coats. However, even with a good waterproofing, sensitive leather should not be exposed to all weather conditions. In addition to protection from moisture, the waterproofed leather also needs to be re-greasing, depending on its intended use, to keep it soft and prevent fading.
What to consider when waterproofing leather
The disadvantage of aerosol cans is their ingredients. Applied outdoors, they're generally unproblematic. These sprays shouldn't be used indoors, as they can be harmful at a certain concentration in the air.
Waterproofing treatments have no care properties! They only provide limited protection and are unfortunately often equated with proper "leather care." Unlike waterproofing, leather care is intended to preserve the leather's good condition for as long as possible.
