Defects in the leather

The term “leather defects” refers to defects in the finished leather, which arise, for example, from damage to the rawhide or errors during storage.

Color defects in the leather

Discoloration can be one such leather defect. This is the result of insufficient color fixation due to overly concentrated dyes or insufficient washing out after dyeing. Color defects arise from incomplete dyeing, which are made even more apparent by other damage.

Grease rash in leather

A grease rash is also particularly common in oily leathers, such as lambskin. This occurs during production at elevated ambient temperatures. Furthermore, if the tanning agent is unevenly distributed during tanning, tanning stains may appear on the leather. An uneven grain side of the leather with a hollow underneath is due to a skin defect on the animal. This is called loose grain.

Leather defects due to outdoor farming

However, leather defects can also be present in the animal hide itself. These are scars or irregularities in the grain pattern of the leather, which can especially occur in animals raised outdoors. We utilize this characteristic to give our Gusti Leder nature products their vintage charm.
